Ocean City MD Beach Safety: Tides and Rip Currents

A tide table cannot tell you that the ocean is safe to enter. Use local Beach Patrol instructions, current forecasts and posted warnings before making a swimming decision.

Why neither high nor low tide is a safety rule

High and low tide describe predicted water levels. Rip currents, shorebreak and waves depend on more than the level shown in a table. A lower predicted height is not automatically a lower swimming risk. The National Weather Service explains how rip-current behaviour varies with waves, tide and beach shape.

Check the official local information

Start with Ocean City Beach Patrol for its published operating season, instructions and beach information. Guard availability is seasonal; a lifeguard chair on the beach does not establish that a guard is currently on duty. Check the date and actual staffed area rather than carrying summer assumptions into an autumn or winter visit.

Use the National Weather Service Ocean City page for relevant forecasts and alerts. Follow posted instructions and speak to the on-duty lifeguard when available.

What a tide table can help with

The inlet prediction table can help you anticipate changing water level for shoreline planning. It does not classify a swimming zone, forecast rip currents or measure the surf at your chosen beach. Keep those separate checks in your plan.

A practical pre-entry checklist

  • Confirm that your chosen area has appropriate supervision and access.
  • Check the current forecast and any posted warning or closure.
  • Ask the on-duty lifeguard about local conditions when available.
  • Do not enter to test whether a predicted tide is “safe”.
  • Keep children and weak swimmers out of unassessed conditions.

If you encounter a rip current

Review the official NWS rip-current safety guidance before a beach visit. It explains how to avoid fighting the current and how to seek help. This guide does not replace emergency services or instructions at the beach.

Plan other beach activities

If conditions are unsuitable for water entry, a dry-land plan still needs safe access. See walking and boardwalk planning and photography timing. A photograph or archived tide table on this site does not show today’s beach conditions.
